Very keen to get hold of this disc but BeArTon recordings aren't easy to find. Apart from ordering direct from them can anyone suggest where I might look?

Ordering from them is the easiest option - delivery is quick and prices reasonable through the shop portal.

Thanks, Peter. Do you have any of their discs? Have just enjoyed the latest in the Naxos/Wit Szymanowski cycle. The concert overture is great fun, the Fourth Symphony a fine piece, too.

Yes, I've got this Szymanowski, the Lutoslawski, the Royal SQ, the new chamber orchestra one and the two Karlowicz. All excellent, I think.

"The Royal SQ" aka The Pearls of Polish Music - The Polish Chamber Music is a favourite disc, especially the Bacewicz. The Pearls of Polish Music - Zarebski is interesting stuff, sits well with Chopin and Liszt. --And as Peter said, ordering from BeArTon is a pleasure.

Just arrived, listened to twice. I purchased mainly for the VC 1, perhaps one of the most fantastic (literally) pieces of the VC literature. Things start out promisingly-enough, wonderful, warm immediacy of sound most of the time, especially in quiet passages. There can be a touch of flatness and a draining of color in some of the climaxes, though Szymanowski's writing can be especially dense; piles upon piles of minor 2nd trills, close chords in the bass and the like. Is there a bad orchestra in Poland? They always seem to deliver the highest quality playing. I also appreciate BearAton's upfront technical details: "hi res PCM with DSD master by Polyhymnia." Why is the such an issue for other companies? I listened in 2 channel BTW.

I imprinted on Dutiot/Juillet performance of the VC on Decca and fell in love immediately, later I was urged by a friend to try the classic: Wilkomirska (on Muza Poland) because Juillet wasn't "feverish" enough. Yes: Wilkomirska leaves the proverbial "scratches" in one's back, such is her assertiveness and alas Jacowicz on this SACD is perhaps less assertive than even Juillet. Not that Jacowicz doesn't get the music, both he and orchestra immediately descend into Szymanowski's half-lit, hot-house soundworld but the soloist's moments of langour are so passive that the ultimately the music often stalls out IMHO. The all-orchestral, Straussian climax is also broadened which to me has the unintended effect of being distracting as well, breaking the spell.

On a brighter note, the Symphony 4 was an absolute delight.
