....I was looking at these posts from 2009. I received an email today (June 8, 2012) from Ben Zander's office saying that he recorded the Mahler 2nd this past January with the London Philharmonia and Telarc will be releasing it later in 2012. Hard to say what this means in relation to the information contained elsewhere in this thread, but, anyway, it is an update from an official source. No word on whether or not it will be in SACD format.....

Michael Bishop of Five/Four productions confirmed in an email to Gramophone Magazine readers (June 2012 issue) that Zander's Mahler 2 was recorded at Walthamstow with the Royal Philharmonic for Telarc. For that matter, Telarc no longer has the production capacity to produce new recording itself.

The Message from Mr Zander's Office was correct and the e-mail to Gramophone from Mr Bishop incorrect; see

http://www.philharmoniachorus.co.uk/news_items/117

The Recording in January was in Watford (at the Colosseum) and was with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus not the RPO.
The soloists were Mia Persson and Sarah Connolly.

It certainly looks as though Linn have been picking up some former Telarc projects as I think there is a Boston Baroque release in the pipeline too. At least Linn are still producing SACDs!

I think they are recording in a new super hi-rez format, too. (11.2 mhz!!)

How do you know that? Surely they stopped recording in DSD years ago?

We'll never know of course as they never knowingly tell us anything useful about the recordings we buy from them.

It's not actually Telarc, but an off-shoot of them from what I read. Here's some info from this site:

Ah yes, thanks. I'd temporarily forgotten that discussion. Maybe worth buying for SQ reasons rather than repertory.

I would be quite surprised if they have recorded the second at anything higher than normal DSD SACD rate.
I am pretty sure they would have used the opportunity to boast about it if so, like they did recently with the Pearlman recording which was proudly announced as the FIRST super hi res DSD Classical Music recording ever.
I have both Mahler's third and 6th on SACD from Zander's series and they are both good with a natural and realistic soundstage even in stereo. But especially the third shows its age a bit by cymbals that sound a wee bit like frying bacon, instead of the super brilliant metallic sparkle when two metal sheets are struck together with great force, they have live.
But on the other hand, together with massed strings, that is one area where I think the best most natural and realistic sound is still analogue, and then on direct cut LPs.
Tape has a tendency to get overloaded by too much very loud high frequency energy.
Both via my headphones and now Martin Logans, even the best of hi res pcm and DSD seem to lack that last ounce of high frequency sparkle and natural decay into silence that analogue at its best captures so well.
PCM seems to squash and jumble things and DSD to me sounds slightly softer and more mellow, than the real thing on all recordings I have heard so far.
Who knows, maybe, maybe there is more than hype from Five four production regarding 11,2 mhz DSD.
Maybe we actually need 11,2 mhz DSD to capture all that difficult instruments to record like strings and cymbals and triangle deliver live.
What might make me buy this Mahler 2 would be Miah Persson more than SQ.
But if I am wrong and it turns out to be 11,2 mhz DSD I would want to hear it as native download of course.
I am pretty sure that is one of the things Five Four will offer once they get their site ready.

But regarding the second,Channel Classic's Mahler 2 is already very good both musically and SQ wise imo.
And for the very best DSD recording and performance of the 3rd DECCA has the stunning Chailly from Concertgebouw.
And for the very best digital recording I have on SACD and download Mahler's 1st as recorded by Channel Classics is hard to beat.

Re your rather unreasonable deletion of the entirety of my earlier comments because of links to vendor sites, I see that you yourselves have links to Amazon UK and Amazon Germany as well as Linn Records(another vendor site) on this very net at

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Zander

Where this very recording is advertised. One rule for posters and another for......
