Yes, it was recorded live in the Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo in October 1999 by a Japanese team. My reaction to this disc is rather better than Beethovenfan. I find the recording a reasonably faithful representation of a small early music group set well back in a large hall. I like the performances too but I haven't heard the recent set. I have just put on the Schubert set they did for Sony in '97. It is warmer and very much more reverberant than the Beethoven sounding like a church rather than concert acoustic. Perhaps that is what Beethovenfan is hankering after.

I agree that the recent zig-zag Beethoven cycle by Immerseel is a very fine achievement and I really hope it will eventually arrive on SACD. Not only the symphonies were done, but many of the overtures. The band made a special study of orchestral practices specific to Vienna during the time when Beethoven was writing the symphonies, including instruments, and their realisations are often revelatory. I shall be waiting patiently, but enjoying the RBCD set meanwhile!

Hi, this SACD and the first recording of the 9th on CD are linked to liveconcerts in 1998 and 1999 (with some pianoconcerto's). I saw them all, they were rough diamonds and trilling exercises, (wishfull thinking : probably close to the expierences in Beethoven's days...). And this magic is on the 9th cd and on de SACD with 5th and 6th but the latter's sound is not what I heard live.
The new set is linked to concerts the last years, I heard the 5th and the 9th, again fantastic but this time more finished, close to perfection ? The recording of the 9th was a few days from the concert I attended.
The new set has it all, freshness, guts, tempo, colour, and ... sound !
Recorded in surround I hope for SACD's...
