According to Sony Insider, JR already has it for pre-order at $1,499.
Very nice looking unit, but what is Sony doing? 30th Anniversay edition of "The Stranger" is released sans-SACD layer, then they release a new Elevated Standard player?

According to Sony Japan’s press release, the DSD multi-level filter, D/A converter system, and Super Audio D/A converter technology are the best Sony has produced to date. A twin R-core transformer and D/A system that is independent of the general processing chipset allow a truly clean signal output that should offer nearly zero distortion. Power consumption is rated at 25W and standby clocks in at a mere .5W. Dimensions are W430 × H124 × D390mm, and consumers will be surprised at the hefty 10.2kg (aka 22 pound) weight.
For SACD Playback -
Frequency range: 2Hz ~ 100kHz
Frequency response: 2Hz ～ 50kHz(-3dB)
Dynamic range: 110dB+
Harmonic Distortion: 0.0012%
For CD Playback -
Frequency response: 2Hz ~ 20kHz (± 0.5dB)
Dynamic range: 100dB+
Harmonic Distortion: 0.0017%

Although Sony dropped the SACD format shortly after its introduction, being a Japanese company and considering the popularity of this format with Japanese hardcore audiophiles it is not at all surprising that Sony had to come back to SACD sooner or later.

Is this a stereo only player from its analog outputs and a multi-channel player through HDMI? Will Sony or someone else do a mch bitstream DAC to connect with this product?

Yes, to the first question (no jacks available for anything but L/R). And either through HDMI, with the switch to set the priority.
I imagine this player is designed primarily for use with an HDMI receiver, bringing SACD into the modern digital world.

Sony continues to release SACD both in the US and Japan.

May I first of all thank Yoeri Geutskens for his FAQ pages.
Secondly, may I request a simple explanation of HDMI and its advantages, and the connections needed for this new Sony player to its matching multichannel amplifier?

What is the point of a high-end receiver that outputs the DSD (or a converted PCM) bitstream via HDMI? You may as well get a £150 one?!

One advantage is that you can use a single HDMI cable to replace multiple pairs of analog interconnects.
As for "matching multichannel amp", there're a number of compatible home theater receivers and pre/pro that can accept/decode the native DSD bitstream from the 5400ES, such as those from Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Onkyo/Integra, etc.
Btw, the $170 Oppo 980 can also output the native DSD via its HDMI output.
