Hi everyone,

We haven't done one of these in a while and I think this is helpful to some who might be on the fence as to whether or not to buy certain titles, skeptical perhaps if the final product is good enough to invest in a copy of their own.

Any SACD is allowed whether it's classical or rock, hybrid or single layer. Naturally, do not cast your votes simply on the popularity of the music, but on the quality of the sound and production, even if it's the packaging or the RBCD layer of a Hybrid that impresses you. Comments and track highlights are encouraged and welcomed, but please don't turn it into a thesis.

And yes, I know those of you who own 400+ SACD's will have a tough time narrowing down to 10 choices, but that's the fun of it! It makes you think a little!

Cheers,

Dan

OK but for me the "favorite ten" change with my mood and what I last heard. Most of them are superb! With exception of the first one, my listing below is not in any order of preference:

1) Bach: Sonatas & Partitas - Julia Fischer Julia Fischer has a gloriously rich tonal palette and all the technique necessary to do whatever she wants with this music, and mostly what she wants to do with it is make it sing. I love this set!

I was in the men's room during intermission at her recital at Middlebury College (Vermont) last spring when this old guy - 10 to 15 yrs older than even I - held up his copy and stated: "I never much cared for Bach on unaccompanied violin, but after hearing HER play that second sonata just now, I really couldn't resist!" I already had my copy of course, but I knew exactly what he meant.

(2-10)

Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 - Foster

Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 - Janowski

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 13 & 24 - Helmchen, Nikolic

Dvorak: Symphony No. 8, The Wild Dove, The Noon Witch - Kreizberg

Bartók: Violin Sonatas - Annar Follesø

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto - Fischer, Kreizberg

Mirror Canon - Tor Espen Aspaas

Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas Vol. 1 - Igor Tchetuev

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 11 & 12 - Janina Fialkowska

Debussy: La Mer - Nézet-Séguin

Tomorrow it would have been a different 9. As I collected the above, I saw and or thought of a lot of "favorites" I had to pass by. I won't mention them now. but there are lots!

The order of these is hard to pick, and almost arbitrary:

1. Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3, Debussy: La Mer - Munch
This one I picked because of the organ in the Saint-Saens. One of the best SACD demo pieces. Also a wonderful piece of music.

2. Russian Violin Concertos - Fischer/Kreizberg
Love the Khachaturian on this one. All the Julia Fischer discs are great but this one is really something.

3. Bach: Sonatas & Partitas - Julia Fischer
My introduction to Julia Fischer. Never gets old.

4. Alison Krauss: Live
Great example of what DSD recording can do for live popular music.

5. Bach: Goldberg Variations - Glenn Gould (Zenph)
Brilliant technology! I think I like this better than the real deal. The binaural version is a lot of fun too.

6. Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Haitink (LSO)
Superb -- perfect maybe -- Beethoven cycle. Not a single weak moment. Hard to believe these are live.

7. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd in surround! 'Nuff said.

8. Bach: Violin Concertos - Hahn/Kahane
Really nice renditions and clear sound.

9. Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 - Rostropovich
Some folks don't like this recording due to the almost insane dynamic range. But for my money, this is the best Shosty Fifth.

10. The Moody Blues: Days of Future Passed
Great packaging of an old classic. Very deluxe, worth the expense.
