Its good news and bad news.
The exisiting Digital DAB radios will be useless as the current system is to be scrapped in approx 7 years. All digital radios of today will then be scrap.
The new system will have ability for at least 4 channel surround.
Interesting how they will transcribe the 5 channels into 4.or not.?
QUALITY DESCRIBED AS SLIGHTLY LESS THAN CD.

What has this got to do with SACD exactly?

Yeah, I really don't get the concept of pre-mp3-data compression in surround. I'm sure others will be excited about it.

Because of the way the US radio stations have re-engineered digital radio so as to keep their current dial positions, I still think there will not be multichannel radio here in my lifetime. Not that I find that to be a great loss...

Surround recordings can be broadcast - may stimulate more interest in SACD.

Yes, but who still sits down in front of hifi speakers to listen to the radio?

The general lack of public interest in digital radio (as opposed to innovation in TV technology) shows that most people regard radio only as a medium for background music in the car or the kitchen.

I do.
My small Hifi system in the computer room is built around a preamplifier, a decent power amp (2x100W) and a couple of floorstanders. This is the system I use to listen to the radio with my analogue tuner.
Even when listening to background music only, my ears deserve to be treated with respect ...

If radio goes surround, I'll just throw in an extra power amp and a couple of speakers.

Hi Dan
In time this will become universal IMO. Provided it can be hyped up in USA to be progress? and seem like an American invention.
To be honest Ive had my say on Surround. The big problem is I still see it as a gimmick..Therefore it has a short lifespan.

Well then, does DSD have any future in digital radio? I hope so.

It could be. As I like to say, nobody knows the future. I remember that a lot of folks got excited about AM Stereo when it was first announced. Here in the US, people are just learning about digital radio. When they find out there is no clear advantage to it, they may decide not to bother with it.

To the poster who wrote that most people listen to the radio in the car, this is still true; and the car has been proposed as the place to bring "surround" come to the masses. Thus the ties among SACD, surround, and radio make this thread at least somewhat relevant.

We don't even have compressed digital radio yet (after decades of effort). You're ready to scrap that, skip PCM and go straight to DSD? 8-) Of all the attributes we could assign to the American radio industry (my former home), "foresight" wouldn't be one of them.
