Robert,

Thank you muchly for Refractions - Choral works by Valen, Berg, Messiaen, von Webern, especially the Valen works. It would be marvelous to get a disc of 20. C norske string quartets from BIS with Valen etc, similar to that recorded by Oslo Strykekvartett circa 1995.

I expressed regret here that the Valen symphony series wasn't on sacd and, as I recall it, Robert expressed regret that it was recorded at all. I'm really looking forward to "Refractions" as well as In the Shadow of War and Aho - Oboe Concerto.

Well, that's honesty for you. If I constantly scream from the rooftops about how wonderfully exquisite all our productions are, noone will take me seriously.

Of course we make our duds, and - for me - the Valen symphonies and other orchestral works are unlistenable. That we actually spent 3 volumes in recording them is bravery long having passed the limit to foolhardiness or, better, stupidity. If one wants to listen to what a master REALLY could do with 12-tone music, turn to Skalkottas. Now THAT's music, hard, difficult, but music.

However, the choral works as in part of Refractions are a totally different kettle of fish. Sung like this, they're actually palatable! And the rest is absolutely top-notch!!!!!

Robert, we seem to have a mutual friend who now runs the independent classical music store in Salisbury, England. He tells me he used to paint the artwork for BIS CD covers so you should know who he is. Lots of your products lined up on his shelves but (by the way) we don't seem to see them in HMV anymore.

Beethoven: Piano Trios - Kempf Trio

Finally I got hold of the producer. No, SA-CD.net is right and I was wrong above. 24/44,1 it is.
Why it isn't on sale at eClassical.com in more than 16/44,1 is something I will bite into when I get to the office.

Robert

Well, my copy arrived today. Methinks one only had to play it to realise ... instantly ... that this was not one of your pure DSD specials. I found it sonically most disappointing. I am frankly amazed at the difference between this (24/44.1kHz) and your excellent new Zimmerman Trio 24bit/96kHz recordings. Of course, there may be other factors at work as well, but either way, the sonic improvement on the new Zimmerman recordings is astonishing.

Dear Robert,

Your commitment to recording music beyond the standard rep, and to your artists, is absolutely second to none and ought to be loudly and repeatedly praised. That those commitments extend to recording music you don't even like just further proves the point. I look at my shelves full of black and white spined jewel cases and see Aho, and Dutilleux, Fagerlund, and Fitkin, Pettersson, and Pulkkis, and yes, Valen, and Villa-Lobos as well as so many others whose music I've found through BIS recordings, and I am amazed that they continue to come when many of them can't possibly even recover their costs. You have my profound respect and gratitude.

Different halls, different artists, different repertoire, different producer/recording engineer. Those are the decisive factors, not the sampling frequency.
Sorry you didn't like it. Had you bought it as a download you know where, you could have given it back for a full refund!

Best - Robert

Dear Bill,

I humbly thank you for those words.
Well, the commitment is there for sure, and the word of honour in my repertoire policy is "CHOICE". Unless people have the choice to listen to something, professionally recorded, they don't know what to love or hate or anything in between.

Yes, I really do hate Valen's orchestral music with a passion, a passion I will not let decide my daily life, since I will only listen to any of those CD:s under physical duress, but BIS is not about my personal taste - BIS is about giving other the choice to others to love or hate. That's why we record this kind of repertoire. And give you people the choice.

Unless the publisher had taken me aside on an IAMA (International Artist Manager Ass, where I was invited as a speaker) and basically sat on me until I promised to listen to Fagerlund's music, neither I, nor you or anyone else would know of his existense. This is where I think we are doing something good, and that's what keeps us going.

CHOICE was the word.

Robert

I've seen that BPO/Fischer will be performing List's Faust Symphony. Any chance Channel records this?
