Sounds good to me Robert. Looking forward to the results (and the subsequent teeth gnashing).

Shall we say another 2+ weeks? This gives me time to try to think about a nice Award, should anyone be right. Say Sunday Nov 22 midnight US Pacific Time?

Best - Robert

OK, I'm game! :-)

Just ordered my copy on Amazon.fr - unfortunately they foresee 2-4 weeks delivery time, so I might not make it to the deadline. Even if I don't, I can't get screwed on this one - I'm sure these discs will prove to be excellent value for the money!

My French distributor, Codaex, has them on stock. Cancel your Amazon order, if they are that slow, and call Codaex, talk to Francois - 01-39 080102.

It's OK, don't worry about it - I actually bought these discs because I think they are a great value. Order is already placed with Amazon and they offer free delivery to Belgium so I'll wait.
It's no big deal if I do not get them on time for the "fun test" - I am actually quite convinced that they all sound equally great and that I will most probably not be able to tell the difference anyway...

Well, Belgium is even better, since Codaex has their central stock for BeNeLux-France in Lummen.

I finally took Robert's test, and have to admit that trying to determine the differences - if any - between the five discs of the 9 Beethoven Symphonies was a very difficult task. First and foremost it has to be said that ALL of the discs sound nothing less than superb. On an "A" through "F" scale, all rate at the very least a solid "A," and from there it's a matter of adding a plus or two.

My observations - for whatever they're worth - are as follows: Symphonies 4&5, as well as 3&8 sound very similar to me, and each rate a solid "A." I do agree with another poster that the dynamic range of the Eroica is a bit less than ideal, but had I not read that post, I doubt I would ever have noticed. Next, are Symphonies 2&7, as well as the glorious 9th. Both of them sound similar, and rate an "A+." They sound a bit livlier and brighter than the previous discs, and since to my ears they sound a little better, I'm going to go contrary to the norm and say that they're made with LOWER,not higher, resolution, just to be ornery. The last disc, Symphonies 1&6 sounds the best to me, and rates an "A++." I can hear the "wood" in the bass fiddles and cellos, and to me that's extraordinary. And again, being contrary to the norm, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this recording was made with the lowest resolution of all of them.

So, I'm guessing that the "pure" DSD recordings were the 4th & 5th, as well as the 3rd and 9th, since I think the others sound better, and Robert has stated, over and over again, why he chose to use lower resolution on newer recordings.

So, Robert, am I even close?

My 3rd post on this! I agree that 1&6 sound best, but for the reasons I gave before (which I accept are most probably nonsense!) I think 3 is done in DSD.....
Can't believe we have to wait 2 weeks to find out!

Hmmm... a few minutes ago in Recent Additions I saw
* BIS-SACD-1482: Piano Trios by Shostakovich opp. 8 & 67 / Schnittke (Kempf Trio)
-- but now it is GONE. Premature announcement, or second thoughts?

PS: We already have these Trios on SACD, but still no Schnittke String Quartets (yes I am rather fixated on SQs -- but Schnittke's quartets are Really Interesting...).
