Looking at JJs reviews as now posted, it appears he never wrote any in English. Perhaps he cannot. I see no other posts apart from his reviews. What I wonder is how much he uses the site for purposes other than posting his reviews. Obviously he must have some ability in English. Perhaps not enough to feel confident to write in it?

It looks like Mr Millo is only copy/pasting onto this site the reviews he has written since January 2006 for his own review site, and he adds a rating (usually 5 stars for the performance and 4.5 stars for the stereo and multichannel sound).

What I find truly hilarious is that when JJ mistakenly pasted onto a BIS Cantata SACD with the Bach Collegium Japan a review of a trumpet recital SACD (/showreviews/4413#4654) 2 out of 6 actually found the review "helpful".

BTW I also subscribe to the thesis that this should remain an English-speaking site for better cross-communication between participants, even if I personally can read (and even understand) more than 10 languages. I don't think, however, that people with less than perfect English should be victimized because of spelling, syntax or other mistakes.

There are quite a number of non-5-star reviews on his site. I do like the layout and presentation! (Am I allowed to say that?)

Now that IS interesting .....
I am perhaps reassessing my attitude to this entire thing on discovering that JJ is copying and pasting from his existing site that is in French - obviously his work is available to French speaking people without their accessing this site and so one wonders exactly what practicality his posts here have.
My initial attitude derived from having visited Switzerland and finding that in the French speaking Cantons of Valais and Vaud, I encountered many people interested in classical music who did not speak "L'anglais"

To be fair, it seems that he is pasting only reviews with the highest rating (there are more than 200 reviews on his site: thanks Claude for having discovered it)
Now, some remarks from a guy whose French is the mother tongue, who reads reasonably well English sentences but has great difficulties to write proper English:
- I am of the opinion that it's always easier to read a foreign language than to write it, therefore I think that non-English reviews should not be discouraged even if they must be the exception.
- I agree that the best approach is to add at the end of the non-English reviews brief abstracts in English if the writer has such a skill. Otherwise someone else with the ability to read the language and to write in English could add those lines (assuming it is possible from a technical viewpoint).
- I agree that English is the most common language to communicate with foreign people at work. However this professional language can sometime barely be referred to as English. I have written many reports in technical English but I feel myself totally unable to write a decent review: I have not enough subtleties in my words to describe what I feel when listening to the musics I like (or dislike).

Thanks Lionel for pointing out the ratings on JJ's site. I didn't check the site very thoroughly and completely missed the sense of these symbols.
Reading his reviews with low ratings give a much more complete impression.

I've enjoyed reading his reviews; for me, they are good, short and informative. And, as I said earlier, the website, in my opinion, is presented very nicely indeed.
I have found that trying to translate them into written English is more difficult than I'd anticipated; I think I kid myself that I understand more than actually do!
