Reviews: Bach: Cantatas Vol. 34 - Suzuki

Reviews: 1

Performance:   Sonics:
Bach wrote every single week one cantata. Not every cantate is good. Some of them are amazing. This SACD contains 3 excellent cantatas. About the performance: when I bought this: 3 series where available. Gardiner, Koopman and this Suzuki.

From that 3 I prefered the Suzuki, just because of there performance. Followed by Koopman. Koopman did not give the music in SACD quality. However: there is one single note about this: The cantatas on the first 27 discs are not in SACD quality. The first ones where with Japanese vocalists. this had the consequence that the German language was not perfect. The reputation was resettled after replacing them.

After a lot of CD's in that line: they made the step to SACD. It's annoying that the most famous cantata: nr 80 Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is not on SACD. The performance was great. They started performing SACD's later. Suzuki nr 34 continues with the same performers. The cantatas 1, 126 and 127 belong to the serie of very beautiful cantatas.

The point is: Do you want to buy all the cantatas or just a few great ones? This SACD containes three beautifuls. Cantate 1 is the best of the three. However: The vocal start of Cantata 126 is so special and beautiful: You will repeat that every single time. Cantata 127 is a nice desert after meal.

Bach made these 3 beautifuls cantatas 1, 126 and 127, Suzuki performed it very well. Actually the artists did a great job. This is one of my favorite SACD's.

If you want to buy all the cantatas: this serie did miss the first ones in perfect quality. If you want to hear 3 beautiful ones in perfect quality: this is an excellent one containing 3 great ones Bach made. Especially the corus part of cantata 126 is a must have.
