Just sent to service centre... the player fails to play (skips tracks regularly) every classical SACDs (test 10 discs of different labels) and works perfectly fine with pop/jazz SACDs. Things worsen when set on pure direct mode.

Anyone had this problem before?

Hi,

Which of the discs are hybrids, and which are multichannel?

I'm pretty sure the player can't make a difference between music styles, but it might have problems with discs with multiple layers.

Have you checked the cleanliness of your discs? This lazer mechanism is very very sensitive to everything from fingerpfints to slight marks..(so are most BTW)..I have used a special cleaner / polisher on ALL my discs and it improved the sound.
I have not upgraded Operationg system on mine (3910) since new and have occasional problems with DVDAs which seem even more sensitive that sacds. This is also a heavy machine and should not be put on a light vibrating stand and should be very horizontal. The disc mechanism I believe is the same as the other good Denons and has a reputation for failing.
The difference with Pure Direct is very curious and indicates an internal failure on one of the boards.

Hi... it's really strange as I've stated... no problems with DVD-A disc (and I have no classical recordings on DVD-A) and plays DVD DD5.1/DTS perfectly fine.

SACDs are all well kept too... fortunately the player is still under warranty. And another note, all the classical SACDs played fine previously till about 2 months ago. All discs were tested on multichannel layer only.

Denon said they'll take about a month to sort it out. :(

I have had a Denon 2900, a Denon 3910 and a Onkyo DV-1000. All of them got problems after 5-6 months. The only solution was to change the lazer. Then after a few months the problem occured again. Cleaning the lens and discs made no difference. My bedroom player, a Pioneer dv575 has worked well for a couple of years. Alas the sound and picture quality reflects the price. So maybe I'll just have to get rid off my SACD's ....

Hi,

They replaced the complete CD/DVD/SACD unit in my Denon 2900 one year ago. It has been working without problems since that.

Denon and some other manufactures using the same SACD unit have an epidemic problem that can be corrected only by replacing the complete unit.

Hi,

the unit that reads SACD, DVD and CD in the player. It is a module that can be replaced ... pretty much like a CD/DVD in you PC.

My 3910 has just been returned from having the video/transport unit replaced as well as a software upgrade. No audio problems but it would vibrate heavilly on some movie discs and freeze. It has had intermittent video problems since the purchase (it was a demo) and my cheap Pioneer universal back-up player just keeps on keeping on with a picture quality almost as (if not as good) good as the Denon. I've never used it for audio. My previous DVD2900 never had a problem.
