Not necesarily - if you place your DVD-A in your player's tray and hit directly the 'play' button (and not 'close' first) the disc will start playing immediately. I always listen to my DVD-A discs without switching on my TV.
However, if you want to switch from the multichannel track to stereo (or the other way around) then you have no choice but going via the menu.

On my Denon, when it starts in two channel, I press stop, then play and voila - multi-channel. No menu needed.

As far as SQ goes - they both have poor to fabulous titles. But SACD it seems, is still fighting bravely for survival while DVD-A appears to have thrown in the towel. I blame the record companies and the audio dealers for a complete lack of promotion. However, the component makers must be praised for continuing to supply the machines for these formats.

Last month, I asked Naxos an unrelated question and tagged a question as to why they're not releasing anymore DVDAs and SACDs. This is what I got on the subject:
"We regret that we have stopped releasing new SACD and DVD-A releases – DVD-A is already dead and SACD is dying – in 2005 sales of SACD’s dropped about 40% as compared to 2004 and continue to drop in 2006. The format is no longer supported by any of the majors and hardware is difficult to find. Even most independents have started cutting back on new SACD releases."
(from Naxos customer service)

Well, of course Naxos's SACD sales fell in 2006; they haven't issued anything new for ages, not since Handel/Mallon. What they did issue was not as interesting as recordings they didn't issue as far as I am concerned.

Coming back to the original subject, I think the DVD-A discussion is history. I am much more worried by BlueRay and HD-DVD, which also support high-resolution multichannel audio.

I fear that these HD format will pose a much bigger threat to the SACD format, and I wonder if I will still be able to play my SACD's in 10 years....

Well...
This should be interesting...Its advertised as a Cd but wont play in CD players ? Its surround is centre stage so that splits the surround camp listeners ? and its nothing more than an old fashioned DAD type disc for playing in normal dvd players and it has lower res dolby surround..A bit like the ill fated dualdisc if you ask me without DVDA ie MLP.. Good advertising and its priced lower than the sacd version, ironically one of the worst issues when trying to get a proper sacd version due to Amazon and Ebay always having the same disc listings as sacd when it is a normal cd (which this isnt)
