It would be good if someone who actually saw this performance reviewed the discs.

I'm willing to bet Shane Warne's cricket bat ( as demonstrated on the recent 'News of the World' photo gallery ) that the stereo DSD track is split the same way as the CD amd MC layer. The multichannel might need 4 discs, but the stereo is more logically laid out one disc per act. Wonder if anyone at Melba has woken up to this.

Cheers

Reading the article I noted a very worrying thing, 64 channels and mikes!!! used .
There is a big risk that this is going to one of the worst cases of multi-mike overkill since SACD was introduced!!!
My bet is that as so often before with the Living Stereos for example , the recently released 1955 live recordings from Bayreuth will sound more natural and realistic than this modern recording, although they have unfortunately only been released as RBCDs. I was hoping there would be LPs as well .
I'll probably still listen happily to my LPs with Solti and Karajan.
Musically the Karajan set is still unbeatable IMHO.
And the sound is, most of the time, quite good on LPs with lots of natural, realistic timbres and a clear sence of real acoustic space. The Solti set is although more superficially impressive, actually more obviously multimiked than Karajan's set.
I wonder what pure DSD transfers would do for those DGG masters?
I'm surprised Universal Japan hasn't done that already.

Agreed completely. I have the Karajan set on remastered RBCDs. The sound is very good throughout, there is a considerable improovement over the earlier CD issues. This is the first time i experienced the Ring as a thrilling story, whereas it allways seemed lenghthy to me before.
Since all the work of re-mixing to high-res has allready been done, even including time allignements between mikes, this would merely have to be transfered to SA-CD.
Although a DSD remix may be the theorethical optimum and most people think SA-CD isn't SA-CD without multichannel, i still think it would be an excellent idea to release these 24/96 stereo remasters on SA-CD. The Karajan 62' Beethoven cycle is the best proof of what can be achieved. I cant understand why DG discontinued this excellent aproach, first for artificial multichannel and then droping SA-CD completely.

The only complete Wagner opera on SACD, the late 1960's Tannhäuser from Universal Japan, is a great buy, not only because Birgit Nilsson sings two parts, but because the sound has much less steeliness in her upper register than the Decca CDs of her singing. I never heard her in person, but I don't believe 16/44.1 PCM does any justice to her voice.

MDT : I'm curious as to your choice of Accuphase gear, as I presume you live in Switzerland or Deutschland. There is so much expensive European hi-fi. I see that Goldmund and MBL now have SACD players, as well as all other replay electronics. Does Accuphase give a different sound on SACD to these other companies? The descriptions of Accuphase CD player sound, 'deep bass but lively presentation' seem to mimic the Wadia CD players.

The main advantage of Accuphase, is that it actually doesn't have a "sound". It is very neutral and lets the music come though naturally. I have had different levels of Accuphase equipment over the years, the higher i moved, the more did the impression of listening to equipment decrease and the more could the music be heard and felt immediately. Also Accuphase' service and customer care are excellent.
I've heard several other products, also some famous and more expensive, but most sounded like "showtime" to me, possibly spectacular on first hearing, but less usefull for longtime enjoyable music- (not "hi-fi") listening.

The Walkure is reviewed here, no mention of the recording quality though:

Second sentence says the recording is technically superb.

Does anyone know what format this was recorded in? Are they 96/24 PCM, or something else?
