With the greatest respect Chris and AmonRa what an earth has this discussion, interesting that it is, to do with this thread which is about the new site?

Good question. I went back to see how the exchange between them started, and this is the best answer that I can give:
The new site will exclude CDs, but includes anything of higher resolution (except DVD-A/V and BDV). AmonRa has served as the "devil's advocate" in favor of CDs, and continues in that capacity. Chris is not the only one to engage him on that subject.
I have enjoyed the debate and have learned some of the following:
(1) higher resolution transfer of low-res digital masters still produces only low-res results
(2) compression filtering is responsible for much of the pathetic audio quality found on many CDs and SACDs alike
(3) many CDs, especially those of the 1980s and 2000s, have superlative audio characteristics when played on newer machines
(4) multichannel, even of lower resolution, may provide a better listening experience than stereo of higher resolution
(5) the listening tests that supposedly debunked SACD used test discs of variable quality
Those are not my ideas, but are trending opinions in the ongoing debate. So don't jump on me!
I believe the point of the discussion is that the new site will go by the format specs rather than the intrinsic qualities of the music. So long-play SACDs will be included, even though they have CD-quality sound, and CDs will be excluded, even those with better sound than most SACDs. The new site, like this one, will be format based.

Actually, it's including BD-V as well now. This makes the exclusion of DVD-A kind of obnoxious, IMHO. Windhoek noted this a few pages back: http://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=10892

The reviews I contribute to HRA of jazz SACDs and Blu-Ray discs will primarily focus on the qualities of the musical performances.

My own jazz collection includes SACDs, BDAs, XRCDs, RBCDs and LPs. If I own or can borrow an earlier issue, I'll do a critical listening comparison, and those observations will appear in the reviews.

See my reviews of Sonny Rollins:The Bridge http://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=8850 and Miles Davis: Take Off http://www.hraudio.net/showmusic.php?title=10624 for comparisons between the subject titles and earlier RBCD issues. In these two cases, the sound quality was, to my ears and on my system, signficantly improved.

But if I think that an SACD or BDA does not offer sonic improvements compared to earlier standard-resolution or analogue issues, I will not hesitate to say so.

Glad to know about this. Thanks for the updating.

I really don't know what the new site is trying to achieve which the old one didn't. I just looked up a title on both sites. A good review on SACD.net has been deleted. Further the number of 'recommends' has gone from 17/18 on the old site to 9/9 on the new. What is that all about? I am beginning to be more and more frustrated.

Not sure I know what to do. The new site, is complicated and hard to use with many flaws. This site, the so called old site is eroding very quickly.

Seems we are in a black hole of two sites. Well my friends I think the wind has left my sails and I might not be as active as before.

You all have been pretty cool people, I have learned a lot.

Markie (The Papa John Creach fiddler on the ROOF), you don't stop posting until the ship goes down and hits bottom.

Am finally getting my Meridian 800 back in the system after a $2400 repair job. Who said this hobby was cheap?

As for Brett: When you're a Brett, you're a Brett all the way from your first (gasp) ciggy to your last dyin' day. Where have YOU been?

At least Derek gets it and continues to post regularly.

Should be receiving Birds of Fire this week. THAT I'm looking forward to! And Jeff Beck....in QUAD!

Wonder of wonders, Miracle of miracles... we're still on the air.

I'm just chillin' out to David Banner - Certified during these sultry August days. Thanks for the tip! It sounds great.

Glad to hear you're having a homecoming for your Meridian. Beck in Quad will be a great way to re-christen it.

Yep, I keep wondering when the plug will be pulled and we'll all be in the dark.

Still, I like listening to music in the dark! I managed to listen to my newly-acquired Pink Floyd "Meddle" CD last night - thanks to Mark. Wow - I haven't listened to this album for many years and had forgotten how good it is.
