Was quite surprised in perusing upcoming titles that LSO (like 2L) is releasing in dual format: SACD and BD~A with 24/192 mastering in both the stereo and 5.0 surround modes.

As more and more labels (classical and otherwise) are embracing BD~A, the early predictions that BD~A would not survive the "format" wars is apparently unfounded.

The only question which arises: do we need another Symphonie Fantastique x's 2? Including this upcoming release, there are roughly 34 versions listed as SACDs on this website!

Maybe not the only question, but certainly the key one. With my favorite suppliers listing fewer than 100 classical titles, many of them universal reissues in stereo of recordings I already have on multichannel sacd, I regularly weigh the need to add blu ray audio to my listening system and just can't pull the trigger. The pace of new releases is pitifully slow and like the subject of this thread they're mainly duplicative, often many times over. For now this usually early adopter will probably continue to sit it out.

Bill, totally understand your sentiments regarding blu ray but it is a superb medium as my many posts have attested to and to be totally honest certainly gives both SACD and DVD~A a run for its money.

But with the impending UHDTV launch will a better player emerge which will be backwards compatible with both current BD/DVD standards and perhaps also incorporate a DSD standard?

That, in my mind's eye, IS the question.

Great news - thanks! I know Gergiev's previous Sf with the VPO was . . . uh. . . controversial (not least for the SQ!). But Gergiev can also be a great Berlioz conductor too, under the right circumstances - just for the musical values, I love his Les Troyens on blu-ray video (despite the atrocious Eurotrash production).

In any case, this upcoming Gergiev/LSO Sf HAS to be better than the stolid Slatkin performance already available on Naxos blu-ray audio!

As Chris noted, this is Gergeiv's second outing on SACD with this piece, following Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique etc. - Gergiev. It does seem that many of his Philips SACDs were problematic affairs.

I noticed Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 3 "Scottish", Schumann: Piano Concerto - Pires, Gardiner on this site too. Is the LSO doing BD/SACD for all high-res releases?

Bill, I can only strongly recommend the many superb BD-V discs, which add immeasurably to the hi-res catalogue, - and in multi channel. I agree that Universal are polluting the BD-A medium, but try a few BD-V concerts and operas, - magnifique!

The emergence of BD-A, as well as downloads, will be eating into the small niche which had been exclusively SACD. It is interesting that the LSO label is putting out both physical formats. That may be some sort of marketing test or a contract issue, but I would not expect it to continue indefinitely. Hopefully, LSO will not shift to RBCD and BD-A.

According to One Bit Audio, BD~A has 159 current releases....and counting but the ratio of SACD to BD~A NEW releases remains much higher....in favor of SACD!

I did order (of course, from this site) the two upcoming LSO SACD/BD~A combos from AmazonUK even though I own a plethora of the SF in hi res formats but at least it comes with the Overture Waverly, a piece I profess ignorance of.

Interesting tidbit: Upon visiting the LSO LIve website, I did notice that they listed this release as LSO's first audio/video release so I'm assuming that the BD is NOT a pure audio disc but a rendering of the Live concert as well as a BD~A disc, although it's unclear if the latter is inclusive. My guess: no!

It was gratifying, as always, to read Castor's glowing review of this 2 disc set and to also be informed that not only does it contain the aural performances of SF on SACD mch and BD~A, but it also contains a full video presentation of Gergiev conducting the live performance at the Barbican in stellar BD audio/video quality.

And, at the asking price, a VERITABLE bargain, as well.

Well, this is very interesting release from London Symphony Orchestra. I heard Sir Colin Davis' recording long time ago, and it got many great awards. This is grippy and powerful account, and Blu-ray Audio brings more details. What do you think?
