From the clips I've heard the concerto and other works all sound very fine interpretatively, and Chandos seem to get great results sonically in Bergen...

This is imho,as Castor says in his review a very good release indeed, both interpretatively and SQ wise.
I can only refer to my only other modern digital recording of the violin concerto the Akiko Suwanai/Philips early DSD SACD from memory, but if anything this new one from Chandos sounds even more naturally balanced and played with real dedication too.
Maybe Suwanai's Strad has slightly sweeter even more realistic violin sound in pure DSD?
But Jennifer Pike is also very good and the fillers are some of the best recordings of these works I have ever heard.
I heard the Swan of Tuonela live in Singapore with Okko Kamu only a couple of weeks ago and this new stunningly realistic Chandos recording comes the closest to hearing it live that I have heard since Eugene Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra recording on a Mobile Fidelity LP.
Balancing-wise this new recording from Bergen and Grieghallen is an absolute model of its kind IMO.
A real orchestra playing absolutely wonderful music very well together in a real believable hall and acoustic!
And most surprising of all for me here in KL Malaysia,I downloaded it all via my hotelroom wi fi in about 20 minutes 1,37 gigabytes flac!

I agree, this really is very good in every respect, but who in the world decided on that dreadful cover picture of Jennifer Pike looking like a Hollywood starlet after a bad night who then mysteriously wandered to the edge of a forest while holding a fiddle?

Chris makes a good point about the fillers, but they led my thinking in a different direction. After listening to that absolutely gorgeous Swan I really found myself wanting to hear the other three Legends, not another Karelia or Finlandia no matter how well done. They'd have just fit, maybe.

Anyway, a wonderful disc that could have been even better.

Dunno. Got this on order, but from the Amazon clips the March from the Karelia Suite is played a bit sweetly like Dag Wiren's Suite for Strings.

And I see, Euell, like MANY titles in your SACD collection, it's a MULTICHANNEL release.

Tsk. Tsk.

Still, Dunno....or in the 'proper' venacular Don't Know?

Knowledge (and absence of rear channel info) IS a terrible thing to waste!

And like pint~sized Nagraboy, only TIME WILL TELL!

Fortunately, all but one of these mch sacd's also have a stereo track. However, the commentary to which you refer was based on listening to a sample through laptop speakers, but it was revealing. In regards to rear channel info., for most it is ambiance. I create my own with a larger than average shoebox shaped room and speaker placement. Love your space, Rammie, and remember your place.

Unfortunately, a FLAT response to Rammiepie's witty repartee! Lacked ambiance!

Writer's block, Euell?

Witty like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Don't hurt yourself twisting your arm to pat yourself on the tushy.

Actually, Euell, I can give a skunk's pouch if you listened in MONO.

The vast majority of my collection is stereo......as in 10K RBCDs save for 75 or so DTS 5.1 titles!

You definitely do make a couple of interesting points there wehecht, both regarding the other three Legends which are on my old reference Mobile Fidelity LP and the choice of cover.
I missed them too.I am used to hearing them together although Kamu performed only The Swan of Tuonela in Singapore.
Judging by the cover in hi res quite sharp jpg version blown up on my 17" macbook pro screen at full resolution, young Jennifer was probably never even there.
It looks very much like a photoshop job to me. Nobody in his or her right mind would pose outdoors on a cold Nordic winterday dressed like that.
And if so,only after having inbibed a lot of you know what.
For those who can see it blown up to LP cover size or similar size on screen, please note the absence of any shadows.

Although Channel Classics did a bit of a photoshop job removing a few violin bows from my original Fischer shot for their Mahler 5 cover,he was at least there.
My guess is that this cover is a clear case of "CUT AND PASTE".
Jennifer in a nice warm cosy studio full of flashes, pasted onto a frosty snowy winter landscape.
Luckily Chandos "seem and sound" to have done nothing of that sort with the sound balancing.
This is THE most naturally balanced recording I have heard from this venue since BIS' early pure DSD Grieg recordings there.
I heard Valse Triste live last night and once again I have to say that this Chandos recording of it is very realistic.
If the other recent Chandos recordings from Bergen are this good too,I will definitely get them while hoping for even more to come from this label and orchestra.

And like BIS' Sibelius symphonies from Minnesota and ASO's from Atlanta this recording also proves that you don't necessarily have to come from Finland to play Sibelius' wonderful music really well.
