More or less, yes.

That tends to make it rather easy. I some times did that too.
Or at least narrowed my choices to a couple in the store and then kinda sorta auditioned and selected. Like I earlier wrote, I was always treated well.

Hope you're enjoying your Esoteric which was a model of exemplary pricing and especially service. Door to door delivery at "the nice price!"

Hi Ralph,
the Esoteric sounds significantly better than my Wadia 301 for CD playback, at least when using the 'apodising' filter, and also than the Marantz DV9600 for stereo SACD.
The dealer stated that Esoteric recommends 200 to 500 hrs break-in time for each digital filter. Yes, for each filter used, not total 200-500 hrs break-in for the machine as a whole! I don't understand why a digital filter would require break-in time, but the dealer was adamant this was what Esoteric advises its dealers.
These players have a dedicated DSD filter which is the default for SACD playback. This filter can also be used for CD or PCM via the asynchronous USB input. The PCM modes have additional choices of two finite impulse response filters and two apodising. I have only used one apodising filter for CD playback since I don't think I've reached 200 hours for plain CDs so far. However, this filter is very impressive indeed-- see Robert Harley's remarks in 'the Absolute Sound' on this in its original implementation in the Meridian Reference CD player.

The K series Esoterics so far [ not sure about the new mega Esoteric which is probably as massive as a Fukushima nuclear reactor core though far more user friendly ] have no standby function : only power on or off. I haven't switched the machine off since I bought it, though the LED display turns off after 30 minutes at idle. I'm using the JPS digital AC cable for it, which I found wrought a big improvement when I originally bought it for the Wadia 301. Esoteric say in the manual that all CD mats are verboten for their transport mechanisms.

I have never had any problems with audio dealers. I go in, ask if they have Xxxxx YX99 in stock, if yes, I buy one, usually some discount is thrown in.

I know what I want, I know what I "need".

Wish it was that simple... ideal world (sigh)...

But you really don't know what you're missing...........

I do not need audio & snake oil salesmen to tell me what I need. Unlike some others here who shall remain unnamed.

You are so full of it, AmonRa. You wouldn't know a good tweak if you tripped over it!

Don't really know much about snake oil but I do take a Fish Oil liquid softgel every day for heart maintenance.

Please, please, revive Tweakers' Corner for this nonsense.

A thousand words (perhaps not that I'll literally write as many for this Post) is what the proverbial 'picture' speaks.

Thanks for your replies. I won't be able to say today all that I've in mind. Briefly, I believe, to Post in SA-CD.net is to actively participate in shaping this ever changing community, defined, yes, by all of what has been Posted ; and, more importantly, by all active Users, including those who don't write but do order...

Specialist dealers, be they good or bad, were a link to solving our individual needs from manufacturers... Today, bad or good, we have the Internet—and each other... :)

I'm happy to be to you as transparent as I can be, trusting it's of use. The above photo is another setup in the small bedroom with the cork floor I like sitting or stretching on. It was a single-speaker few days when I watched films on the Plasma that was recorded in Mono or (as showing of Maya M.I.A.) my backlog of bookmarked YouTube interviews (mono-ed) on a 4:3 Trinitron because of their limited—low quality, averaging 360p ; with screen resolution 480p sett...

It suited the occasion, like I'd said in /showthread/109915/114644#114644 :
Similarly, in audio, I've kept most of the Marantz I'd collected (given away some to friends or family but seldom selling) regardless whether it be 'high-end' or low. Because knowing each product through study (not least studying thoroughly the user manual) and varied accumulated usage means I can assemble a playback chain that will emotionally satisfy specific needs. For example, although I defer to streaming online audio primarily with the Consolette due to its precision in replaying what digital data is present, I will also try listening with the amplification of Marantz MusicLink SC-22 to MA-23s when I want the reproduction it reproduces, a velvety valve-like warmth to vocals in talks...

And /showthread/115065/115498#115498 was a Consolette setup in the same room using... With all other speakers moved out to storage.

Let's share visually in order to understand better how we listen ? As 'tailspn' Tom also did, 10 months ago :
/showthread/103160/103172#103172

Similar to Ramesh, I'd given an example /showthread/39611/113066#113066 of pricing diff...

Well, more next time
