This is a stunning recording, regardless of age, but considering he is 90...wow! Most people half his age would love to play like this. The sound is wonderful too, rich, warm, and lots of presence. We should cherish this one: at his age, we can't expect too many other recordings from him.

I just picked up the Earl Wild, Living History CD, and had the same thought. At 90, its stunning how well these old men can play. Just goes to show how powerful muscle memory is to a pianist.

Not to mention they've spent a lifetime studying and perfecting this music. Some people may prefer Pollini's hell-for-leather approach, but Mr. Pressler, who plays with plenty of power when required, finds depths to the music that many others miss.

One of the greats!! And his work with the Beaux Arts Trio is also sublime. Let's hope for many more recordings from this wonderful artist.

I will give this one a try, as for Pollini he is one of my favorites but it is such a shame for an artist like that to waste his talent by recording for DG and RBCD.
Try this one for Beethoven’s next to last sonata slow movement, I do not hear hell-for-leather approach in this performance ;

I agree completely, this is an excellent recording in every respect, and I'm embarassed that I overlooked it when making a comment in another thread to the effect that 2013 had not seen much of interest in piano recitals on sacd. I hope there will be more to come since there is still much to be learned from the elder statesmen, witness the recordings Horszowski made for Nonesuch in his 90s.

Age certainly has its limits for some, who made recordings too late in life. I can recall a late Horowitz album on DG and a recording of Beethoven's Fifth Concerto by Arrau on Philips with passage work so sloppy that only their revered names could have possibly persuaded the recording companies to release.
