Great news Sir William Walton's mighty Symphony No. 1 is coming to SACD. Bad news it's on LSO Live.

I will get this and hope that the LSO Live engineer's have improved their craft!

I've ordered Kullervo in the same hope - but to be fair it's the Barbican, not the engineers, that is to blame.
Listen to the RCO Live Stravinsky/Rachmaninov and you are in a different world!

Classics Today implies the Kullervo is a sonic improvement over previous LSO Lives - which has encouraged me to get it.

This performance was very highly rated by The Times at the time (23 Sept), and I hoped it would appear on LSO Live. It's gone straight to my "to buy" list, even though it doesn't have the Elgar "Introduction and Allegro" as well. Uchida played the Schumann piano concerto. I wish I'd been there, but had to make do with the broadcast.

And I see that Haitink's Beethoven cycle will be released, too. Again, I couldn't attend which made me even sadder when I read that the concerts were one of "the" London events of 2005. I gather that the Barbican was full for all these concerts (and for the recent visit by Jansons and the Concertgebouw Orkest).

Did anyone attend the performance?

Yes. I was at there in December. I thought it was an absolute knock out but I have to admit it was the first time I had heard the work live. The critics had been a bit sniffy about the ealier performance in September.I hope that the December performnace forms most of the finished disc. Incidently, since the sound quality of the LSO discs is controversal, the microphone technique looked like a Decca tree arrangement over Colin Davis with mikes about two thirds out left and right and some spot mikes amongst the orchestra. Live the sound was very much "in your face" from almost the back row of the stalls. I am looking forward to the disc's release.

lukewarm review of this in today's GUARDIAN at:

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/reviews/story/0,,1772693,00.html

what i'd like someone to tell me is what's the reading on the sir colin davis GRUNT-OMETER? is there much of his usual rumbling and chuntering?

for more on the davis grunt situation, see my review of hilary hahn/elgar concerto and separate thread on grunting posted earlier today.

Not too bad this time - will be posting a review later.
