Discussion: Ginastera: Popol Vuh, Cantata para América Mágica - Asbury

I would like to thank Lute for bringing this little gem to our attention. Respect.

But I think a couple of additional points could usefully be made:

1) The music. This will come as something of a shock to those - like me - who were first introduced to Ginastera’s music through his early happy, bouncy, catchy and salsa-laden ballet suites in the well-known classic Vanguard disc (Villa-Lobos: Little Train of the Caipiria, Antill: Corroboree - LSO/Goossens).

Be advised - Popeh Vuh and the Cantata are nothing at all like that. No, sirreee. These pieces reflect a sterner, older, harder-edged and far more modernist-leaning composer. No tunes, much atonality, banging and wailing. But intense, unique, attention-grabbing and good fun.

2) The sound. Lute hasn't discussed this. It’s only 24/48, but it’s actually damn good. Only a slightly crunchy top end reflects its relatively low bit-rate PCM origins.

Ignore the bits and use your ears, though. It’s open, lucid, well staged, airy and transparent; it also has stupendous dynamics. The sound matches the music well, and will also give your equipment a nice work-out in the process.

Faultlessly played by the Köln WDR Orchestra, soprano and assorted percussion-bangers, I can thoroughly recommend this to anyone interested in off-the-track 20th century music.

Go on, what have you got to lose by trying something new?

Ditto!!

As much as I love the standard classical repertoire (Bach, Mozart, Mahler, etc..), I do love to venture off the range (so to speak) and be surprised. And this SACD was certainly that. But more than just being a novelty item, I genuinely enjoy this music and find myself returning to it often. It has an energy and drive that is quite infectious.

Ginastera was very ahead of his time as Ligeti, he just dont had his music exposed in world wide audiences as Ligeti in 2001´s Kubrick.
Shame about the low cost recording.

Doh? Low cost recording? Now what exactly does that mean?

This sounds a damn sight finer than most 'high cost' recordings with forests of mikes, massive amounts of expensive mixing, editing, post-processing and general malarkey.

Gee, I wonder if there's some connection?

Seriously - I have to ask whether you've actually heard this recording.

If you think cheap and expensive are appropriate yardsticks for recordings, you're way off beam. Actually, I'll go further than that - I would posit a negative correlation between cheap (ie simple) and expensive (ie complex) classical or other acoustic ensemble recordings; the simpler they are, the better they tend to sound, all other factors being equal.

Of course, simplest doesn't necessarily mean easiest, but that's for another day...

If it is "para defacacion" I think I will skip this one.
I think HIP HOP and Rap and certain other genres covers that already very well.

None of these: I have become attracted to this Composer by ELP rendition of his TOCCATA.....his works for the Keybords are simply standing out (I think only ASF has released some 3 vols of his piano music + his SQ on another one). Alberto Ginastera and Villa-Lobos brought serious addition to XXth century music as well as Ligeti or Varese.

Concerning this particular disc: it is quite demanding on both sides, e.g performer & listener. Nothin for Erich Kunzel followers :-)

Have you listened to Mompou?
