This performance of Christopher Rouse's Flute Concerto is amongst the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my lifetime. A graduate of The Julliard School, Katherine Bryan is principal flute at the RSNO and a much sought after soloist. Were it not for the relative anonymity of the flute as a solo instrument Katherine would be hailed as a rising super star in the manner of Nicola Benedetti.

A deeply reflective, poignant reading played to perfection, I defy any of you with even half a heart to sit through this work without shedding a tear. This is one time when your heart rules every time. I didn't want it to end. The Ibert provides suitable relief for the Kleenex.

Another very fine recording from Linn that deserves success and no doubt will become a probable award winner.

One is bound to ask if Linn's nowadays rarer excursions into the world of physical disc are deliberately engendered to gain publicity through favourable reviews and to garner awards. If so it is a brilliant marketing strategy backed up by equally brilliant engineering 'nouse' and it seems to work every time.

I was going to pass on this one but not now. Thanks for the review.

I have her Liebermann disc, and it is one of my favorites. I'll be ordering this. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks, John. Her Lieberman disc is terrific but I was going to pass on this because of my aversion to Mr. Rouse's usual assortment of crashes and bangs, which is what I mistakenly assumed this would be. Now it'll go to the top of my list.

I hope you will enjoy this disc.

I agree totally. This is a fantastic work! Like hiredfox, I cry like a baby every time I hear it.

As a matter of fact, when I was laid on the operating table for a Whipple operation (which includes a very tangible risk of dying), my request was to have this Concerto as the last thing I heard when they sedated me - of course in the heart-breaking recording of Sharon Bezaly with Alan Gilbert and the Royal Stockholm PO, a recording that so moved Chris Rouse that he offered to compose another concerto for her. Unfortunately only on RBCD physically, but high-res in down-loading - BIS-CD-1586 (with other music by Rouse) or 1799 (with Flute Concertos by Brett Dean, Nicolas Bacri, Chris Rouse and Leonard Bernstein).
Haven't heard this recording, but KB would have to be outerwordly to top Sharon's reading. I don't think anyone can. Ever. It is that good.

If your original master is hi-res, please consider issuing it as a SACD... not all of us are into downloading.

It is 24/44,1, but not surround. Therefore it doesn't qualify according to our principles for newly recorded stuff.

But you seem to have a vivid artistic imagination and an emotional reception. Why don't you just skip the technical discussion and enjoy the fabulous music and its performance instead? In the final analysis that's what it's all about.

Thanks for the explanation, Robert.

I might just do that.

Robert, I am delighted to hear that thankfully you made it through your operation unscathed!
On your opinion about Sharon Bezaly recording I would have to say that this recording by Katherine Bryan is really in a different league! Katherine possesses a technique and musical ability that is simply beyond all pears. Katherine brings an amazing sense of performance to everything she plays. It is so alive and diverse in colour and shape. Furthermore the Martin is a revelation to me. To hear it in this version is such a joy. An all round exciting and stunning recording. I'm sure her career will continue to go from strength to strength. A true world class performer.
Jeremy.
