Unforgettable melodies, the colorful score, exciting story and masterful orchestration - I guess that Piotr Tchaikovsky's (1840-1894) "The Nutcracker", Op. 71 success based on those things. Today it is the one of the greatest ballets ever, and very popular piece on opera houses and concert halls.

What a wonderful disc! I've heard many recordings of Liszt's "Dante Symphony" but this is simply the best!
1) I guess that this is the only SACD release of the work - or at least the only multi-channel SACD. Anyway, the surround sound is very realistic here: the rears are used only for the reverb. ... more |

Manfred Honeck - the principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - has done an impressive recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. The performance was recorded in 2011 at the Heinz Hall, which is the orchestra's main performing space.

This disc wasn't an impressive listening experience. I cannot understand why PENTATONE released another recording of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto!
