Unlike the sonic disaster on the "Incredible Wes Montgomery" SACD (that album sounds bad on any reissue), the tapes of this session have aged well. This is a one-time meeting of two legends that worked extremely well. Pianist Thelonious Monk and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan play mainly Monk repertoire, accompanied by Monk sidemen Wilbur Ware (bass) and Shadow Wilson (drums).

This 1972 recording is one of my favourite Can albums. It is also very accessible to Can newcomers and well recorded. The first "side" consists of 3 songs and the second "side" of a single track with long instrumental passages.

This album and the following "Laughing stock" (not available on SACD) mark a clear departure from Talk Talk's 1980's light synth pop. Until recently I thought this was the best digital version of this monumental 1956 session. The SACD sounds very good indeed.
