Because many early Sony SACD releases are getting hard to find, I recently ordered this SACD (from Caiman), although I did not expect to hear a big sonic upgrade from the 4CD set I have of Boulez' Ravel recordings for Columbia (released by Sony France in 2002).

This disc features the new Mobile Fidelity mini-LP packaging. I's a sturdy cardboard album reproducing the original front and back covers of the LP (minus the Riverside logo). The artists on this 2005 Chesky SACD were previously unknown to me. Carlos Franzetti's ensemble is basically a drummerless trio (saxophone, piano, bass) with the added colours of a string quartet and a flute and clarinet, which are mainly used as background textures. As far as the interpretation goes, I'll just say that this is my favourite recording of "The Planets", and I refer to the other two reviews. The Grainger composition is a nice bonus.
