A mixed bag.
These two performances have something in common: they both come off as heavier than other versions.
Christian Tetzlaff's reading of the violin concerto is heavier and more muscular than say Isaac Stern's account with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

In a word, Gergiev's Shostakovich 7th is: dull.
After a very promising first movement which is both fiery and appropriately martial, Gergiev suddenly slows down to a crawl.

Disappointing. As is often the case, the Cincinnati Pops lacks the necessary weight to pull off a great film music rerecording, let alone one dedicated to epic scores. Maybe if they used a couple of more microphones closer to the strings - that might give them more body.

This is quickly becoming my favourite recording of The Planets, far ahead of Dutoit and other more acclaimed versions.
There are some interesting twists and turns in Elder's Planets. The type of twists I cannot recall from other versions.

For T2, Brad Fiedel reprises and expands upon his sound design developed for the first Terminator movie. His electronic palette has considerably increased in the time span separating the two movies. A mechanical, icy and almost all-synth score depicts the Terminator universe.
