This is the Ruslan and Lyudmila we've been waiting for. Previous recordings disappeared out of print faster than you can say "poof!", and most featured questionable sound. It is interesting how consistent Sawallisch is. His performance on this live recording from Munich is very similar to a recent radio broadcast of Schumann's Fourth symphony by Sawallisch and the Berliner Philharmoniker, and both are similar to Sawallisch's recent Philadelphia Orchestra recordings, ... more

The second piano concerto is decent enough. Not a first recommendation, but done fairly well, though again from Yablonsky and this orchestra, one would wish that they had a few more strings for the recording sessions. A mostly good disc, but I have some reservations which have more to do with release schedules and comparative listening than with the actual quality of this album.
