When I first listened to it, Jaap van Zweden's Beethoven cycle started off badly. His reading of the first symphony was awful. His tempi just didn't make sense and broke the work apart. A spacious, wide-ranging soundstage is the set for this Shostakovich 7th by Fedosseyev, a reissue from a 1996 recording.
Lush, warm strings are a definite bonus over the Yablonsky and Gergiev discs.

Gergiev's reading of #5 has nothing wrong with it, but has nothing to recommend either.
It's a rather dull, fairly bland performance, especially when it comes to Gergiev's usual energetic style. I myself do not like his style, but there is no question that he usually tries to make the music ... more |
