I have to agree that the Rite lacks some of the primal intensity that other conductors have brought forth in the past, but the orchestra plays flawlessly. Big, beautiful recording of big, beautiful, romantic music. I am not a musicologist, so I'm not aware of how many organ concerti exist, but this combination is more effective than you might expect. The music is full-blooded and tuneful, and the organ certainly adds color to the orchestral canvas. ... more |

Quintessential, timeless jazz. These tunes and the interpetations can hardly be improved. Zoot swings like there's no tomorrow, and the rest of the band swings right along with him. I guess everyone is just in love with this disc, but I feel differently. I was left cold by the performance and the recorded sound. I prefer a warmer, more solemn interpretation, and these symphonies, while energetic, seemed to me somewhat underplayed. Perhaps it's the thinness of the recording ... more |
