What charming, interesting music, and beautifully recorded! There is no sense whatsoever of the mics being too close, as can sometimes happen with chamber music, yet the instruments' tonality and impact are perfectly captured with realistic spatial cues. Szell works his usual magic with this music, and it comes out sounding so right that one can almost hear past the recording. Whether this recording is analog or digital, made yesterday or 20 years ago is no matter; it is stunning in every respect. This was the worst listening experience I've had with SACD so far. The high frequencies on this disc made my ears hurt, and I do not have a bright system. Performances are lively and emotional, but I couldn't get past the shrillness I heard to enjoy the music. |

I found these performances dull and the sound to be shallow and very lacking in bass content. I don't know if this is a function of the instrument, the performer, or the recording, but it totally put me off this disc.
