Each new recording devoted to Sofia Gubaidulina is always a welcome one, for the musical universe of the Russian composer is both fascinating and essential in the field of contemporary music. Today, the copious program of this SACD allows us to discover four scores from differing periods for chamber music, and whose star instrument is the guitar: “Repentance,” dating from 2008, for cello, three guitars and double bass, magnificently played here by Wen-Sinn Yang (cello), Franz Halasz (guitar I), Jacob Kellermann (guitar II), Lucas Brar (guitar III), and Philipp Stubenrauch (double bass); “Serenade” from 1960 for solo guitar, a small piece of less than three minutes; the “Sonata for Piano” dating from 1965 played by Débora Halasz; and to conclude, making it world première on disc, “Sotto Voce” from 2010-1013 for viola (Hariolf Schlichtig), double bass and two guitars. Sofia Gubaidulina stated about this work: “I am fascinated by the somber color of the instrumental grouping and by the possibility of creating a contrast between a “sotto voce” sound, muffled, almost whispered, and the expressivity proper to the bass instruments.” No doubt about it, here is a musical voyage where emotion is far from absent…
