Performance:   Sonics:
Dedicated to the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, in brilliant interpretations, magnified by an exemplary DSD remastering, here, in two stereo SACDs, is a musical anthology that cannot be ignored. These analog tapes from concerts dating from 1970, 1971, 1980, 1983 and 1987 have here been remarkable restored. On the program are the full ballet “The Firebird” from 1910 with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Vaclav Neumann, the “Symphony in C” from 1940, with the same orchestra directed by Christoph von Dohnannyi, “Les Noces” with Brigita Sulcova (soprano), Miroslav Svejda (tenor), Anna Barova (mezzo-soprano), and Dalibor Jedlicka (bass), as well a the pianists Zdenek Jilek, Petr Adamec, Jiri Holema, and Stanislav Borgunia. Zdenek Kosler directs the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. The instrumental suite “L’Histoire du Soldat” is here interpreted by the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, and the Tokyo String Quartet offers us the “Three Pieces for String Quartet” from 1914, as well as the “Concertino for String Quartet” dating from 1920. This copious program concludes with “Three Songs Based on Shakespeare” for mezzo-soprano, alto, flute, and clarinet, with Milada Boublikova, and the members of Musica Nova Pagensis. Here is a release not be missed.
