Manfred Honeck - the principal conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - has done an impressive recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. The performance was recorded in 2011 at the Heinz Hall, which is the orchestra's main performing space.
Mahler's Fifth is a Romantic Symphony in every ways: it contains the passionate feelings, beautiful melodies and its orchestration is heavy and muscular. The whole work is a thrilling journey from sadness to joy.
I listened the whole album with the Full Score (Edition Peters, reprint: Dover Publications). Mahler was a skillful conductor and he did very careful work with the scores: the every movement contains many performing terms, such as "Ausdruck" (Expression), "Wuchtig" (Heavy) and "Verklingend" (Dying away). Mahler wrote also the notes for the conductor. For example the first page of the second movement contains the following text [it is written at the bottom corner of the page]: "The sense of this "rit." is, in both cases, a short pause, in order to drive toward the following chord with great force. The figure itself must be played in quick tempo". (Translated).
Honeck reaches those notes very well. The playing is here polished: the each movement reaches its ideal atmosphere. The real culmination is the beautiful Adagietto: the strings golden tone is overwhelming. I've never heard so warm voice! Honeck offers an unforgettable experience, indeed.
The recording is excellent - as always. The clear acoustics of the Heinz Hall is captured perfectly.
