For those who want a sneak preview of what to expect from this release, here are Honeck and his orchestra at the Philharmonie on the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks last fall:

Sounds pretty good to me.

WOW...sounds impressive...almost Solti/CSO'ish...better even that it will be affordable
Thanks for sharing...I guess this recording will be my 17th recording of Mahler's 5th to own (between RBCD and SACD)
Cheers

17, wow! What are your favorites? I'm looking for a good foothold into Mahler's repertoire. Maybe the 5th is a good place to start.
You mention Solti and the CSO; they contribute to my yet uncounted stack of Beethoven 9s.

Yes, it does (the orchestra & SQ), but the interpretation is so indulgent, deliberate-sounding, and slow from the first note on that it's hard to follow the development and make sense of the structure. I couldn't even finish listening to the 1st mvt. What a difference some decisions can make -- just compare with Mahler: Symphony No. 5 - Abbado, which is from another planet altogether and gives you a chance to really appreciate the work (my overall favorite along with his 1995 Amsterdam live). If you prefer close, more analytically considered readings, then Boulez is your fare, but not this; ufff, terrible. In that sense fully comparable with Solti's Mahler... not Mahler at all. Mahler's music is of nature: natural, flowing, and with the spontaneous force of the elements.

PT, are you familiar with any of the prior recorded installments in the Honeck/ Pittsburgh cycle?

No, I'm not, so I know I should moderate my reactions more; plus, I know he worked as an assistant to Abbado in the late '80s, so I've been curious to sample his work.
Cheers,

Well, at one time I was an aspiring orchestral trumpet player and the opening solo of Mahler's 5th is the all time number 1 excerpt one must play (along with Pictures At An Exhibition, Stravinsky's Ballerina Dance from Petrouska, etc)....
Those days are long gone but I love Mahler even more now than I did then...
My favorite Mahler 5's are Solti/CSO, Royal Scottish, N Jarvi, New York Phil, Masur, and finally, San Francisco, MTT (the only one on SACD until the Honeck comes out)
Oddly, the deal breaker (for me on any recording of Mahler's 5th) is the 4th mvt, the Adagietto....most treat it as a funeral dirge (Bernstein at Bobby Kennedy's memorial service). The Adagietto is a LOVE LETTER from Gustav to his wife...Bruno Walter, a protege of Mahler, took the Adagietto under 9 minutes...Honeck's seemed just right...
'nuff for now
Cheers,

Not quite; Abbado's M5 is available on SACD as well (even if it's PCM sourced): Mahler: Symphony No. 5 - Abbado.

I stand corrected!!!!! Well, there is actually another SACD if Mahler's 5th on SACD (which I will not mention more because while I liked playing, I found the sound to be horrendous) so I must have been thinking of Abaddo's stunning Mahler 6 on a DG SACD....
Cheers,

You must have been sleeping. Apart from the ones already mentioned, there are at least a couple more of M5 on SACD, if not all of them satisfying: I also have got Haitink RCO (1970), a pretty decent Janssons RCO, Stenz, Gergiev and Zander, and I know there are a few more (Nott, Macal, Haenchen, Zinman). And a Fischer M5 is forthcoming!
