Performance:   Sonics:
While I love this album alot and praise the wonderful voice of Miss Vaughan the original sacd release was just plain nasty sounding. It stunk and was a terrible showing of sacd. Either the tapes are old and worn or great care was not taken to transfer said tapes to the dsd converter. The old sacd was horribly bright and worn. It just sounded so very tired. I rarely listened to it.
for these reasons.

This new shm-sacd improves on things considerably. Gone is the harness and loudness. The listener can actually enjoy the music and Miss Vaughan's voice. However given the money spent on this title I believe all things considered that it was not worth it to buy this sacd again. The improvements, while real are not so outstanding as to justify the price. I believe a new transfer should have been done using the latest technology. Which is improving all the time.

The reason I state this is simple. When Universal Japan makes new 2010 dsd transfers the results are simply spectacular to say the least.

However by and large....with the exception of Getz/Gilberto all other sacd's released from older dsd files were not much better than the original release or in one case..downright worse. At these prices it simply wont do.

Listeners need to understand that these new sacd's created from the older dsd files have essentially the same sonic character as the older sacd's. There might be some improvements on a small level but ultimately one shouldn't expect a new nirvana of listening pleasure.

That being said I hold to a single view point with regards to these new shm-sacd's:

1) Universal Japan should concentrate only on brand new tape to dsd transfers and ashew from using older dsd masters. Unless ofcourse the original recording was actually created by recording with dsd only and exists only in dsd.

I would recommend this sacd were it not for the steep price.
