Performance:   Sonics:
I have the original sacd of this album and while it sported decent sonics 1t was very compressed and overly loud. It grated on ones nerves.

This new shm-sacd is superior in every way. It is more relaxed, warmer and realistic and musical. From start to finish. It has a nice energy level to it.

Clapton's style certainly changed drastically when this album was released in the early 70's but he also kicked his heroine problem and was only considering singing and songwriting.

So we have excellent vocals and terrific musicianship.....all conveyed rather nicely on this new sacd version.

Highly recommended.
Good job Universal Japan.

I had to listen to this SHM-SACD several times before I understood exactly what it was doing relative to the domestic SACD I also have. I always considered the domestic pretty decent considering the source material, but the SHM-SACD has a clarity and sense of natural dynamics that the domestic doesn’t have. The domestic is a little warmer, but in comparison to the Japanese SACD it’s also a bit cloudier. Clapton’s voice is outlined more clearly on the SHM, but without sounding etched. Like almost all the SHM-SACDs I’ve listened to, everything just sounds “right”: natural and perfectly balanced. I would definitely recommend this to any Clapton fan who has an SACD player. The domestic is no slouch, but this beats it.

The music speaks for itself. One of Clapton’s finest efforts, and an amazing comeback from drug addiction. Every song is a winner.

This is an amazing DSD transfer from japan dub tapes that are in excellent condition! I can't praise this SHM-SACD enough. It's up there with the very best transfers like Black Sabbath S/T, Dire Straits S/T, Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers", among others.
The sound is very analogue, open, clean and with lots of textures. And there is a lot of energy in the sound that makes me feel totally involved with the music. Not all tracks sound equally good, but that's how the recording/mixing was done.
A definitive 5 star for the DSD transfer. Buy it before it is Oop.
