WORKING MY WAY THROUGH THE FONÉS No. 1

I was intrigued by Arnaldo's review of -- in his words -- "Baroque Concertos for Reverberation and Multiple Reflections from Pergolesi's time". This is the period when composers were writing works for multiple choirs in opposite corners of echo-enhancing churches, e.g. San Marcos in Venezia, so after a few moments of reflection, I ordered it.

It arrived yesterday with two other discs, including Quartetto d’Archi della Scala*. After supper I put this disc on the Shanling first; within seconds my wife was nodding and swaying to Geminiani's version of Corelli's version of La Folia, a bit of a favourite tune in this household. "Do you like this performance?", I asked; "Oh yes, very nice, very spirited playing" she replied. "How's the sound? Too reverberant?" I asked; "Nope. Lovely sound". Bravo Signor Ricci!

So mon frère critique Arnaldo, I do not doubt your displeasure. Nessuna giusto con mio gusto, but other Forum members may be amused to learn that the two of us here found it to be quite fun listening, with a sound that adds to, rather than distracts from excellent musicianship from a famous ensemble. I wasn't certain when I ordered the disc, but I am happy to confirm that this is indeed THE I Musici -- the di Roma guys who've been getting stellar reviews since 1952. And damned energetic playing for old fat bald guys! No hardening of the attitudes here, the conception is al fresco.
