Sonics: |
stereo sonics: very good sound. I do not agree with the statement of JW. I have no problems with channel confusion. On the contrary, this is a record with a piano that is not 5 meters wide but fits in well into the sounstage and that is rare enough. What did he expect from the music? This is a simple jazz trio gently playing standards. Nothing else. If it is necessary to record that is another question.

Performance: Sonics: |
SO WHAT ! That should have been the title of this thing. The music on it hardly transcends the stuff you hear from those trio's in big city hotel lobbies. I have no idea why an album like this had to be made. Surely the sonics should be good, coming from DMP you might ask? Well, if you like piano players with arms that seem to stretch from you right speaker way past your left. Or if you like weird channel separation in general. Skip this one!

Ok,
I understand many people don't consider this kind of easy listening jazz worth listening ... and I think I had the same predudice when listening to this record for the first time.
But the skill of the musicians is so very high and the performance is so relaxed that sometimes I really want to listen to this record ... and this shows that I really like it, I guess. Of course you must be in the mood for this kind of entertainment.
Stereo sonics is Ok and has some soundstage in it.
Multi-channel sonics is excellent even if I'm not using the sixth full bandwidth channel available!. This recording is not using the LFE subwoofer channel as it was intended but they have recorded one full bandwidth channel there instead and it can be used either for overhead or center back channel. The benefits of this channel set up cannot be proven in my system but it does not do any harm to the standard 5.1 set up I'm using.
This is a DSD recording ... are DSD recordings so ood because you cannot do any compression or other tinkering with the DSD signals?
(Chesky's DVD-As also had a special channel set up but with SACD they did not take that into use at all.)
