I'll take my Bach any which way he comes... that is to say I neither like only HIP nor am I allergic to the larger, big-boned, and even "romantic" interpretations. Mengelberg's St.Matthew Passion is well regarded in my collection, as is some McCreesh. (I concede that Solti in Bach is a abominable perversion, though.)
My favorite recordings of Masses in B-minor are Richter's, Rilling's, and Herreweghe's accounts. I'd hate to bump one of those (Herreweghe, as it were) off that list... but I must add the Veldhofen recording to it. It is such a genial, enthusiastic recording that it has chances to overcome the instrument/performance-practice ideology divide. Maybe not entirely... but even those who have a hankering for Scherchen and the like would not likely run away. There's a fine review of this up, already, and I need not double-Yay where there has already been such praise... but say that it is most deserved. The excellence - in an understated way, as far as the soloists are concerned - of this issue can hardly be overestimated. And the sound (stereo for me) is marvelous. This is not perfection (and Herreweghe, it should be said, has the more consistent and even singers), but it is infectious Bach-playing. Indeed: Great Bach-playing.
