Songs of Faith and Devotion and Black Celebration are my two favorite Depeche Mode disks. The Rhino/Mute LPs sound great, but the sacds are other worldly. I don't know if there was a re-mix of the high-rez, but the scarlet book layers sound much smoother and less bright than the corresponding red book layers. As for SFD, any DM fan should own this already. If you get a chance to listen to the high-rez, you will pitch your cd into the trash. The sound quality is that obvious. On the stereo layer, the bass so much tighter and cleaner. I can't vouch for the 5.1 though. The sound on the dvd pcm 2.0 layer is very good also.

The odds of finding BC on sacd at a two figure price is going to be difficult, but there are copies of SFD are waiting to be had. I have a ps3 *.iso of Black Celebration, but I would purchase the sacd if it were at a reasonable price. I also listen to the PCM 2.0 24-bit/48 kHz layer on the dvd disk and that's sound so much better than the red book cd.

I recently spent some time comparing the various audio tracks on this release, after I found the SACD sourround track to be somewhat lacking in the bass area.

I compared the following tracks: CD stereo, SACD stereo, DTS 5.1 and SACD 5.1.

As stated, I feel the SACD 5.1 track does not have enough punch in the bass. It seems somehow to be lost or greatly diminished in the mixing. Otherwise the surround mix is excellent, immersive and at times appropriately inventive. The possible exception is track one, which, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, is rather messy.

The DTS 5.1 track has a bit more oomph in the bass area, but lacks the detail, clarity and openness of the SACD 5.1 track.

The winner, therefore, is in my opinion the SACD stereo track. It offers a significant improvement over the CD track in resolution and clarity, and retains and improves upon the punchy bass I feel is an essential component of the music on this album.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!! Every part of it... it's amazing, the SACD 5.1 it's just awesome, crisp, clear overwhelming sound around you, it's a must for every DM fan... PERIOD :) I own 5 of the DM's collectors edition albums and they are so so great. The MC mix put's everything on a whole new level. Don't miss it... go buy it NOW!
