This disc can almost be interpreted as an homage to the great Bill Evans trio's. The liner notes say it best: "With understated elan and a sublime sense of interplay, this special triumvirate exudes the cool, swinging elegance of the classic Bill Evans trio [...]." Could not have said it better! It's not Bill Evans, but the spirit is there. A very fine effort that stands alone on its own merits.

The sound of this disc can be described as 'real' or 'natural'. There is a band playing in a hall. Remember when you are listening to a live band that there is a wholeness to the sound that you do not necessarily get at home where often the instruments are spotlit or more carved out into the acoustical space. Here it is more like listening to a live performance as far as this soundstage aspect is concerned. This, and the other Chesky 'New York Sessions' must count as one of the finest modern (in the sence of recent) jazz efforts on SA-CD.

D. Hazeltine – p, G. Mraz b, B. Drummond ds, Chesky 2005.
The latest Chesky Jazz recordings, The New York Sessions, are, to me, the best recordings ever because they are the most natural sounding ever. They always record live, not in studios, with minimal but highest quality technical equipment. There is no multi-tracking, overdubbing or compressing what makes the music sound so natural with its original dynamics. The lack of technical equipment may be the reason for the natural, pleasing sound of so many Jazz records of the 50`s, even the monaural ones, combined with the highest quality technical equipment of today Chesky makes the perfect sound. Listening to Cheskys for the first time you will recognize they are out of the ordinary, but I think you`ll have to get familiar with them to hear that they are best. In some of the booklets there are diagrams showing the positions of the musicians during the recording session. That was not necessary, you can see them when playing the record.
On this disc the Dave Hazeltine Trio plays eight standards, one original and the Cinema Paradiso theme by E. Morricone. There are three masters in wonderful interplay and with thrilling solos, a trio capturing you from the start with their interpretations of jazz classics.
