Here is a most worthy box-set uniting three already released SACDs (Norwegian Heartland “The Romantic Orchestral Heritage” and Ole Bull “A Norwegian Pioneer”), as well as an album of two CDs (alas, a DSD remastering would have been welcome!) devoted to great interpreters such as Kirsten Flagstad, Leif Ove Andsnes, Mariss Jansons, Solveig Kringleborn, and also Truls Mork. In “The Romantic Orchestral Heritage” we discover the works of Johan Svenden (1840-1911), Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935), Harald Saeverud (1897-1992) and Geirr Tveitt (1908-1981) in a superlative interpretation of rare scope. In the album devoted to the composer Ole Bull (1810-1880) Arve Tellefsen’s violin takes us to the heart of these admirable pages, most notably the Nocturne for Violin and Orchestra dating from 1842 or “Pollaca Guerriera” from 1835 in the arrangement for orchestra by Harald Heide and in the one for violin by Arve Tellefsen. No doubt about it: if you want to taste the charms, passion and poetry, but also the power, of music which has come in from out of the North, this box-set is essential.
