Review by raffells March 26, 2006 (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
This is a realy important addition to the sacd or any catelogue.Music wise it consists of 17 tracks which start with some violin and orchestra (Trodheim) or string ensamble and finishes off with 6 pieces (not 5 as stated in the notes) with gentle piano accompanying solo violin. The last track In moments of Solitude is also played in a version for violin plus orchestration by J Halvorsen another excellent Scandi composer earlier in the programme..Also Included is a piece by Grieg (Sig Jolsfar) and the reason is explained in the excellent booklet.
The notes indicate that this guy was an excellent virtuosi violinist and travelled worldwide and a lot and some of these works quite clearly show this.Even though one piece is a Scotch Fantasy (perhaps he liked the drink) rather that a Scottish fantasy, It was difficult to detect an influence. I do get the impression someone could do a decent film about him.
Arve Tellefsen is equally at home in this music.I do have an earlier vinyl release which only duplicates a few items. The music is varied Poetic, Melodic and never over the top.The recording is probab;y going to be too close miked for some and extra noises are occasionally picked up but the music occupies by far the greater attention.A disc to treasure and hopefully the start of many other issues from this source.Cannot wait for the companion set to arrive. Its already been reviewed.Dave
