Performance:   Sonics:
I fell in love with the Piano Concerto no. 3, op. 37 after hearing a live performance on the radio by the Cleveland Orchestra and Mitsuko Uchida on piano. Unfortunately, there are limited options for buying this recording on SACD. I decided to try this one without hearing it. Not good.

Overall the sound is cold and sterile; the strings are strident and even a bit distorted sounding. The piano sound is decent, but the orchestra's sound lacks warmth (i.e., sounds very "digital"). The performance overall sounds stiff and clinical. A big disappointment, especially for an SACD.

Performance:   Sonics:
I couldn't disagree more. I have liked this performance since it was first issued. I find it, like the rest of Roll's cycle, to be unmannered and straight forward. Other starrier performers have come and gone in the collection but Roll remains. I don't hear the cold clinical sound refered to above nor any distortion in the Membran's transfer either. We are sitting very very close to the piano but orchestra is well in the balance and on my equipment strings are bright but not steely.
