This is definite a for the most controversial interpretaions sacd.
Quality wise the recording and orchestra are excellent but it has to be considered as an alternative to standard Beethoven versions of these works.I know this has had quite good reviews upon first release but I cannot understand quite why the obvious differences havent been highlighted.
Starting with the 4th concertos slightly louder opening chords than usual is then followed at pretty break kneck pace in a Chopinesque manner and style for most of the concerto?.There is no doubt some fine piano playing and occasionaly you will be taken aback by what appears to be two pianos near the end?.Some interesting references to other Beethoven works occaionaly leap out that I hadent noticed before in 40 years of listening to this concerto previously.Im pretty sure some may dismayed and others smile at the liberties that seem to be taken as well as the sheer brilliance of the overall effect.The final chords dont have time to disappear before we get a Schubert Trout version of the Triple concerto.Again controversial.This was probably Howard Shelleys conducting career beginning and somehow he has talked thee other excellent musicians into this way of performing the works Non Beethoven style .Ive not been too keen a fan of pianist converting to conducters in the past.. ..Ok at the price the disc has to be of interest and certainly has curiosity value..but not to be taken as a definitve performance....Pity we dont have a question mark available for the Star rating.... I really dont know how to grade this....Dave

Roll's swift straight forward unmannered performance is for me one of the best around. Roll and Shelley are in the modern style taking a leaf from the period instrument movement.I do not find the cycle lacks gravitas but is full of the Sturm and Drang that I would expect from Beethoven.

I have never considered speed alone to be a mannerism.Eccessive rubato and so on, may be, but not speed. Incidentally he is slower than Schnabel, Kovacevitch and Fleischer in the third movement and slower than Brendel (with Rattle), Bronfman and Kempf in the second. The clear well balanced sound is an asset even if the piano is a bit too close. This performance is much better than the flippant slick Bronfamn that has been getting good press recently.
