This rates a wow on the entertainment level.Trying to supplement Castors review I think I am more enthusiastic over this disc than he is. The Concerto for Orchestra seems more like a masterly set of variations on a tune known as Bobby Shafto ? It is half an hour long and not a minute is wasted.large and varied orchestra play brilliantly.
It is split into three seperate sections all very easy on the ear ,very individual with just a hint of Prokofiev in style in one part or even Bartoks similair titled work as a comparrison. The begining and ending of the (3) Passacaglia are quite remarkable.Double Bass and harp, eventually the whole largish orchestra and it ends on violins. This version certainly beats previous memories of this remarkable work.
The Chantefluers et Chant etc are in french .The thought of 16 minutes of Polish singing had originally put me off but this cycle of 9 poems perfectly described by Castor are brilliantly orchestrated and not having the text you can just wallow in this orchestration.
Flower of the Night,Grasshopper,The Dog Rose,Tortoise,Alligator and The (quite loud) butterfly are amongst the shortish titles.
So who needs another set of Pagainini variations. On the strength of this disc you all do.
Totally different from the first note to other versions it does have one quiet set that will be the most exquisite and reflective that anyone can have orchestrated.Pity its not subdivided into seperate tracks.
Ironically I noticed that one set orchestrally seems to have been cribbed by Lloyd Webber later on.Excellent booklet and standard cd case bought direct from Bearton (Use dollars its cheaper)
NOWEHERE NEAR DIFFICULT THIS DISC. Buy.
