How can one live in California and not have this disc ? The title track is an upbeat hit, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. And 'Sun Down' has an infectious shuffle and understated swing. This is not one of Wes Montgomery's most inventive albums I think. Having said that, I dare you to try and sit still with this one. At times it has a latin and tropical feel to it. Very uncomplicated. Very pleasurable.
I could not help comparing this Japanese SA-CD with my Japanese pressing of the Verve LP. And the LP just kills it. Somewhat to my surprise I must admit. It sounds much fuller, more analog :-), bigger and bolder, but with what seems to be a little less definition. The brass sounds more brassy and far more natural. The bigger soundstage does brings this entire thing to live.
Back to the JSACD. The three star sound rating was influenced by the utter dominance of the LP over the SA-CD. But let this not deter you from acquiring this disc. It does not sound bad. I find it a little reticent and polite compared to the vinyl, and maybe the LP is euphonic and the SA-CD more accurate. These things are all a matter of opinion and system synergy. But in my rig, that LP just nails it. I went back and forth just to confirm it. Things that make you go hmmmm....
