John Mayall & Friends: Along for the Ride is a wonderful disc that I enjoyed for quite a while and had it as one of my main “car” discs on Redbook CD. The sound quality is excellent and the performance always gave me a lift whenever I played it.
As mentioned above the combo of great musical performance as well as the first rate recorded sound led me to suggest it a few times to MB on Audio Fidelity's web site as a choice to attain for an SACD mastering. I was very happy when he announced he was going to bring out the title and even more so knowing that Steve Hoffman would squeeze every last bit of quality out of the master tapes. I wasn’t let down. It’s now a solid component of my main home listening rotation.
To sum up, this is a great mix of artistic performance by Mayall and his guests along with an excellent selection of tunes all presented as well as one could hope for by Steve’s talented mastering abilities.
If you like a great and varied selection of blues this is one you really can’t afford to pass up.

John Mayall & Friends: Along for the Ride. Hybrid SACD Stereo Only.
Quick Facts: Originally released 2001. Remastered and reissued by Kevin Hoffman and Audio Fidelity in 2003.
Performance: A guest list extraordinaire of musicians that have played with John over the years. British Blues song selection. Nice to hear the song "California" with full band including bass guitar which was never included in original recording. All musicians are heroes from decades of recorded music. Great to hear Peter Green and Steve Miller on same track. Billy Preston to Billy Gibbons to John Lee Hooker all great. A total of 30 guest powerhouses. This disc is more about the performance than the sonic quality which is superb.
Stereo Sonics: A modern recording only to be put to SACD three years later is enough said. Excellent sonic quality, all instruments are clear and well balanced. Rhythm section resonates with great sound. Stereo separation is superb with room filling sound. A standard blues album so there is no trickery, just straight ahead musical instruments.
Packaging: Plastic jewel case with square corners. Original liner notes by John Mayall 2001 and reissue notes by Arnie Goodman 2003. 30 individual color pictures of all the musicians. Some added Audio Fidelity reissue notes.
Performance is what makes this disc and being it is a hybrid great to take along in the car.
