Bon Jovi: Slippery When Wet. Blu Ray Audio Stereo/Multichannel. 2015.
1986, who could forget. I saw "You Give Love a Bad Name" on MTV and 4 other huge videos and I purchased my first Bon Jovi CD in 1986. I saw Bon Jovi during the 1992 Keep The Faith, Cow Palace, tour and I loved the songs but live, I saw the band as too much of a chick band, and Metallica was on the rise so I went into a different direction.
The famous Bob Rock mixed this disc in 1986 and has sold 25 million copies. This disc was also released as a Dual Disc in 2005 with same 5.1 and video combination, but horrendous DR values.
Performance: If you are a rocker like me than this disc is fun/good time music and not to be taken super seriously but it is a fantastic recording especially with songs like Living On A Prayer and Wanted Dead Or Alive. Very layered and with mass appeal to dudes and chicks.
Stereo Sonics: As usual not really the point of purchase but sounds excellent with great clarity, wide sound stage, as good as I remember from back in the day and a hair better. Keep in mind this was a pre 1990 disc and very good recording with no Loudness Wars associated with it. In my opinion if I was looking for stereo only, the original 1986 disc would be a better value.
Multichannel Sonics: This is the point. 24 bit/96Khz of sonic joy. It is a great pleasure to have grown up on a certain recording knowing it intimately. Now, older, and with better listening machines to hear and feel what I didn't hear before is very cool. The 5.1 mix is just about perfect. Well balanced between speakers and ALWAYS an even mix, NEVER an overpowering mismatch of too much here and not enough there. Great job guys. I needed a tiny bit of trimming, listened loud with full Audessy EQ and my digital read out had front left/right as the two power houses and all the others perfectly matched. A slight negative, it can sound like a little too much treble, bright, but this is an easy adjustment. I am very pleased with mix and I listen to a lot of mch recordings.
I listened to via DTS-hd Master Audio and sounded great. All HDMI cables. Guaranteed you will hear things you didn't hear before, in a good way. The song "Living On A Prayer", has an extended ending, very cool sonics, that I have not heard before. Bass is hard and driving beginning to end.
Videos: A great blast from the past, when MTV was king. All videos, per the Bon Jovi style, are all meant for fun, no deep and serious stuff here. 4:3 aspect ratio, but that's cool, who's counting. As a bonus the videos also are in 5.1, but doesn't seem to be as good as the audio only 5.1.
Menu: Best of the HFPA series so far for one simple reason, lyrics move automatically and I didn't have to stare at a track list burning up my plasma. Easy to navigate. No photos as other discs have. Cool little tidbit; on opening menu screen shot the S of Slippery, sweats a drip of water, looks cool. Besides, of course, as always being able to turn off monitor this disc has an option to leave monitor on but turn off lyrics which is cool because it keeps your monitor on but blacked out so you won't burn your plasma and at the same time you can jump right back into the menu if you need to.
Packaging: Typical HFPA plastic case with paper mini booklet, two photos, all lyrics, original album credits and 2015 Blu Ray credits. I didn't receive a download voucher as I have with other HFPA's.
Well, definitely a lot of memories from this music, almost 30 years ago, I can hardly fucking believe it. No regrets with this purchase.
