Not familiar of this title, but does it feature acoustic or electric guitar?

Electric. The only acoustic Eric Clapton I've ever heard is MTV Unplugged. 461 Ocean Boulevard was $5.99 with free shipping at the now defunct yourmusic.com. Those were the days.

Wouldn't it be easier to just buy the surround SACD version?

No - the Quad is a completely different mix. Much better to have both.

Well there you have it.
Now more comfortable owning both the CD-4 and the SACD.
No, don't ask me to compare them.

no comparison! the Polydor/Universal U.S. SA-CD (in Surround) absolutely wipes the floor with all other digital versions of this.. and trust me I have every mastering and incarnation, it's one of my most beloved albums.

if there's a DVD-Audio of 461 OB., it passed me by the last 10+ years!

there's a DTS CD of the album (in two pressings, first run came in regular CD jewel case, a later repress came in DVD-Audio-style "super jewel plus case").. it has the old Quad mix from the CD-4 on it, re-purposed into 5.1 by the folks at Miller-Nevada.

it's an interesting but not a great mix (things notably missing from the original stereo) and fidelity is pretty poor. it's more of a curiosity than an essential (imho).. still, I guess it's fun to have the alternate mix and in a digital version at least, so not all bad news and worth picking up if you can find it cheap (which shouldn't be too hard).

on a related tangent, the other Clapton Quad>DTS CD "There's One In Every Crowd" is absolutely fantastic! Vastly superior mix to the 461 OB.. and fidelity is gorgeous, it sounds surprisingly analogue-like for lossy-DTS, I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone who likes E.C. and surround music.

The SACD mch mix has a prominent center channel, which must indeed require a different mix compared to the LP. According to the SACD liner notes, the mch mix was done by Mick Guzauski.

Hi Fredblue,
Would you happen to have the SHM edition ? If so, I'd like some insights in regards the the other pressings.

The SHM-SACD of 461 OB is great! I just prefer listening to this in surround nowadays (I've heard it so much in steteo, the remix keeps it fresh!) so the 5.1 on the old '04 SACD is my pick of the bunch (stereo on the old SACD isn't up to much though).

great SHF discussion on the SHM 461 OB subject here:

Seems the SHM is superior in every way, according to these posts.

Damn ! I hoped the ST+MC was just as good, given the fact it's way cheaper. Now I'll have to pay more than 50€ to get the 461 OB of my dreams.
