I'm trying to help a friend get a new Universal player and she's focussed on the Yamaha BDA 1000B, 1010 and 1020.

i) They all seem to have 5.1+ analogue outs, but haven't been able to confirm that for the 1000B 0r 1020.

ii) Also, I'd like her to have upsampling to 24 bit for RBCDs, but can't find that detail anywhere. Can anyone help me out here? (Kal?).

iii) Also trying to find anyone in Sydney, Aust. who sells this range 9I'm in the Blue Mountains).

i. Yes for BD-A1000 and 1010. No for 1020.

ii. Dunno.

iii. Cannot help.

You could also try Eastwood HiFi who are actually located in Dural and sell Yamaha gear:

I have that particularly machine. 1st. they sound and pic is good but the rest is crap. To my knowledge you cannot do many settings for the analouge out it has to be hdmi. for sacd you can choose between mch or stereo, or bitstream or pcm.

Pricey solution, but Denon AVR-3313 "AL24 Plus Processing" will do this:
http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/Product/Pages/Product-Detail.aspx?Catid=HomeTheatre&SubId=AVReceivers&ProductId=AVR3313

It works well!

EDIT: It's also a hardware solution that will convert 2-channel source material to multi-channel.

The only real & reasonable upsampling for RBCD has the dCS gear. a bit pricey but works amazing....still not anywhere near to original DSD recording....

All modern DA converters even in cheap CD-players upsample just like dCS gear, and even more, for free.

The best sample rate converters are free PC shareware.

Ignorant idiots pay $20000 for a dSC upsampler box

Perhaps take a look at the OPPO BDP-103 (or even better the 105). Superb functionality but not too sure about upsampling 16bit to 24bit for playback.
